You’ve made the investment and had beautiful hardwood floors installed in your home. There’s no doubt you love the natural wood and it’s added to the value of your home both in style and function.

Now you want to do everything you can to keep them looking so good by properly caring for them. Are you wondering about hardwood floor maintenance for your floors?

Read on to learn about maintaining your hardwood floors and what steps you can take to protect them.

Steps for Hardwood Flooring Care and Maintenance

Choosing your hardwood flooring was a big decision, now do all the right steps to keep them clean properly. This means some daily, weekly, and periodic deep cleaning.

First, when you have any kind of spill you want to get it up right away. You don’t want moisture or food sitting on your floors. You could risk damage to the wood like stains.

As part of your maintenance, you should take a few minutes at the end of each day to sweep or dust over your hardwood floors to pick up any dirt particles.

There’s some debate whether vacuuming your hardwood is a good idea. If you have a non-bristle vacuum, run it over your floors weekly. The vacuum will suck up any particles missed by sweeping.

You also want to periodically do a deeper clean by wiping them down. While vinegar is a popular natural cleaner, you want to avoid using it on wood floors.

Use a damp mop, not a soaking wet one, to wipe down your floors. You never want to use such a wet mop that there is water sitting on the floors.

Protecting Your Hardwood Floors

In addition to regular cleaning, there are some things you can do to protect your floor’s longevity. Remember, quickly wipe up spills, especially if they are liquid spills.

You can also use rugs to help protect your wood floors. Put a rug down in the area before walking on the wood floor. Let the rug grab the dirt before it gets to the wood. In high use areas like in front of the sink, you could also put down a rug to protect the flooring.

While pets are part of the family, you don’t want them damaging your floors. Keep their nails trimmed to prevent scratching of the flooring.

If you have furniture that slides on the wood floors, make sure you have protectors on the furniture legs to prevent them from scratching the wood flooring each time you move the furniture on the flooring.

Monitor spots on your wood flooring that will get regular sun from the outside hitting them. This can cause color changes in the flooring over time. Adjust your blinds during the heat of the day to protect your floors.
